How to Use a Private Mood Check-In

A mood check-in is a brief prompt to notice how you feel, what may be affecting you, what helped and one manageable next step.

4practical sections, a worked example and a free worksheet.

Step 01

Keep the check-in descriptive.

The 1-to-5 mood and energy choices are personal labels for this entry. They are not clinical scores and should not be compared with another person’s ratings. The written prompts often provide more useful context than the numbers.

Name what you notice without forcing an explanation. A situation, thought, physical feeling, recent change or positive moment can all be relevant.

Step 02

A simple three-part reflection.

The tool turns those responses into a timestamped entry on the device. UtilHub does not receive the entered words. Copy or save the result only if you want to keep it.

  • What am I noticing right now?
  • What helped, even slightly?
  • What is one small and realistic next step?

Step 03

Use patterns carefully.

Several entries may help you notice repeated situations or actions that feel useful, but a private journal cannot diagnose a condition or determine whether a change is medically significant. Avoid drawing conclusions from one rating or from a simple average.

If wellbeing is affecting daily life, getting worse or causing concern, use appropriate professional or NHS support rather than relying on a browser prompt.

Step 04

Protect personal notes.

  • Avoid identifiable details when they are unnecessary.
  • Remember that downloads, clipboard history and browser history may remain on a shared device.
  • Store retained entries only somewhere appropriate for their sensitivity.
  • Clear the form when finished on a device other people use.
