Names
The names are popular ones, mostly from Native American culture, as listed by the Royal Observatory Greenwich for 2026. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox, and the Hunter’s Moon is the full moon after it. In 2026 the equinox was on 23 September, so the Harvest Moon was Saturday 26 September 2026 and the Hunter’s Moon is Monday 26 October 2026. In 2027 the equinox is on 23 September, so they are Thursday 16 September 2027 and Friday 15 October 2027. A Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month (31 May 2026), or traditionally the third of four full moons in one season (20 May 2027). The Royal Observatory’s 2027 list gives dates only, so the 2027 names here use the same month names as 2026.
Method
Full moon times are the US Naval Observatory’s, given in Universal Time to the minute and converted here to UK clock time (GMT in winter, BST from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October). Each one was checked against an independent calculation from Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms (chapter 49): all 99 new, quarter and full moons in 2026 and 2027 agree to within a minute. Today’s phase and the share of the disc that is lit use Meeus’s chapter 48 method, which matched the US Naval Observatory’s London figures to within 1 percentage point on 21, 26 and 31 October 2026. On Monday 26 October 2026, at 04:12 GMT. The Royal Observatory Greenwich calls October’s full moon the Hunter’s Moon; it follows the Harvest Moon of Saturday 26 September 2026. The Royal Observatory says it can be seen from about 5.30pm to 6am on the night of 25 to 26 October, and that the Moon will look the same all night.
Full moon is a moment rather than a whole night. The next one is at 04:12 GMT on Monday 26 October 2026, so the night to look is Sunday 25 to Monday 26 October.
The Royal Observatory says it is popularly known as the Hunter’s Moon because of its historic importance for hunter-gatherer societies in the Northern Hemisphere: Native American tribes and early European agricultural societies began to prepare and stock meat for the winter in October, and this Moon signalled when to start. It is the full moon after the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox.
The Beaver Moon on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 14:53 GMT. After that, the Cold Moon on Thursday 24 December 2026 at 01:28 GMT. The full calendar to December 2027 is on this page.
The Royal Observatory gives two definitions. The common one today is the second full moon in a calendar month with two full moons, such as 31 May 2026. The traditional one is the third full moon in an astronomical season that has four full moons, such as 20 May 2027.
