Why the gap changes in March
When New York is only 4 hours behind
The US starts daylight saving time on the second Sunday of March and ends it on the first Sunday of November (NIST). The UK goes forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October (GOV.UK). In 2027 the US goes forward on Sunday 14 March 2027 and the UK on Sunday 28 March 2027, so for those 14 days New York is 4 hours behind instead of 5. Book calls and flights in those weeks with care: a meeting fixed in US time moves an hour earlier for people in the UK.

Worked example: 09:00 in London on Sunday 25 October 2026 is 05:00 in New York (4 hours behind) and 02:00 in Los Angeles. On Wednesday 4 November 2026, after the US clocks go back, the same 09:00 in London is 04:00 in New York (5 hours behind) and 01:00 in Los Angeles.
US rule: daylight saving time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, and is not observed in Hawaii or Arizona (except the Navajo Nation).
