Worked example: 150 miles using the 7 September 2026 benchmark
A 150-mile journey at 45 UK MPG uses about 15.15 litres. At the 7 September 2026 official unleaded average of £1.6440 per litre, the fuel-only cost is about £24.91, or 16.61p per mile. Shared equally by three people, that is about £8.30 each.
Method: Litres = miles ÷ UK MPG × 4.54609. Journey cost = litres × price per litre.
